Tolls, fuel and driving routes in Chile

Plan route expenses and stops before collecting your car. Clarify TAG billing, fuel requirements, mileage and return arrangements.

Understand how tolls will be charged

Ask whether the car has an enabled TAG device and how the company handles recorded journeys. Request toll charges separately from any device, administration or service fee. Ask when you will receive the breakdown and how journeys within your rental period will be identified.

Do not assume that a quoted “TAG” amount includes every toll on your route. Describe your itinerary and ask which payments you need to make directly. Keep receipts and check with the rental company before independently paying a journey it may already be handling.

Record fuel at collection and return

Before leaving the office, confirm the fuel type and ask for the collection level to be recorded. Check the required return level and charges for missing fuel. Save a dashboard photograph with your collection records.

For the return, identify a suitable filling station along your route and leave time to refuel. Keep the receipt and photograph the gauge again after parking. For an electric vehicle, request charging instructions, required connectors and the battery level expected on return.

Build a route budget

Break the trip into stages. Note estimated distances, stops, accommodation, parking and expected tolls. Ask about the mileage included in your agreement and the charge for exceeding it; do not assume unlimited mileage unless it is stated.

Hypothetical fuel estimate: 600 km at an assumed 12 km per litre would require about 50 litres. Multiply those 50 litres by the fuel price you obtain and add a margin. This is neither a promised fuel economy figure nor a published price.

Check your agreement allows the itinerary

  • Describe unpaved sections and ask about restrictions for the vehicle.
  • Ask about border-crossing conditions before booking.
  • Check how assistance operates in the areas you intend to visit.
  • Agree on any return in a different city and its cost.
  • Ask about specific equipment if you expect winter conditions.
  • Check road authority notices and the forecast for each stage.

Prepare each day for offline use

Save the route, accommodation address and assistance contact offline. Identify possible fuel and rest stops before setting off. Avoid filling the day with driving time alone: allow room for breaks, meals and diversions.

For a trip starting in Calama, Puerto Montt or Punta Arenas, ask the branch about your specific itinerary. Finding an office at your destination does not mean every vehicle or agreement allows every route.

Start by exploring car rental in Puerto Montt or compare options at La Araucanía airport. Before choosing a starting point, ask about included mileage and returning to a different branch.

Track any charges after the trip

At return, ask whether any journeys or services still need to be billed. Find out how the breakdown will reach you and keep your trip receipts. When a later charge arrives, compare its date, route and description with your rental period.
