Keep three amounts separate
Ask the quote to identify the rental price, security deposit and excess. For budgeting, treat the first as the cost of the booked service; ask how the deposit is held during the trip and which situations trigger an excess.
Do not infer one amount from another. Ask separately whether choosing different cover changes the deposit, the excess or both. Request the amounts and their currency for the category you will actually book.
When comparing branches in Santiago or arranging collection at Arturo Merino Benítez airport, ask about the deposit for that specific booking. Record which office will handle its release.
Questions about your card
As an example of provider-specific terms, Chilean Rent a Car distinguishes debit payment from the credit card required for its deposit. Do not apply that rule to every company: request the terms for your own booking.
- Is my card type accepted both for payment and for the deposit?
- Must the cardholder be the driver or the person named on the reservation?
- Do I need the physical card and its PIN?
- How much available credit is required at collection?
- How are cards issued outside Chile processed?
- What alternatives are available if authorisation is declined?

Plan the available credit you need
Write down the payment due at collection, the requested deposit and expenses you expect to put on the same card during the trip. Ask your card issuer how a hold affects available credit and whether you need to enable overseas use.
Hypothetical example, not a price quote: with CLP 1,200,000 available credit and a requested CLP 700,000 hold, CLP 500,000 would remain before other spending. A further CLP 200,000 rental payment on that card would leave CLP 300,000. Confirm how your issuer handles each transaction.
At collection: keep the right receipt
Ask whether the transaction is a preauthorisation or a charge, and keep its receipt. Check the amount, currency and reservation reference. If it differs from the agreed figure, request an explanation before accepting it.
Keep only the details needed to identify the transaction. For later enquiries, use the booking number and receipt reference; do not email your full card number or security code.
Following up on a deposit release
At return, request the vehicle receipt and ask whether any charges remain pending. Find out when and how you will receive confirmation of the deposit release. Record the rental company’s process separately from the processing time quoted by your card issuer.
If the hold remains visible after the stated period, gather the agreement, return record and authorisation reference. First ask the company about the release status, then give that evidence to your issuer to investigate the specific transaction.
